A Lever Sparks a Path
A Lever Sparks a Path
Geoffrey Kmitt came to The Los Angeles Film School as an aspiring Filmmaker. After graduating (10’), he unexpectedly went down the path of Special FX. The ‘aha’ moment came during midterms, with instructor Nesdon Booth. He had to make a lever spark as it was being pulled down, recreating a scene from "The Green Mile." They got it to work and Kmitt said, "once I saw it spark I thought it was coolest thing ever, I wanted to do that."
LAFS was essential in Geoffrey’s goal to network with like-minded people. He had been to a previous film school in Ventura but needed to be immersed in the film capitol, Hollywood. "The best way to meet people is move to the center of Hollywood, and LAFS is a great spot to do it,” he said.
Geoffrey now works as an Independent Special effects Professional. He has been on set with the likes of Cee Lo Green for "Forget You" and worked on Angry Birds Live. Despite his success working for several notable companies, he admits it's still hard, "the field [fx] itself is controlled by people who've been doing it since the 70's and 80's and they never retire." CGI also adds to his competition, but there are some effects Kmitt said CGI will never replace, good old fashion gunshots and flesh wounds.
