Best Movies To Watch During Spring Break

Spend the next week watching these movies instead of going to the beach

The first two films on the list might lead you to believe this is a post dedicated to writer/director Harmony Korine, but we assure it is not. He just happens to make movies that highlight the carefree/alternative lifestyle choices that pair well with this spring break movie list. If you’re skipping the beach this week, we recommend spending your free time watching one (or all) of these films. We’ll see you back on campus for the new term on Monday, April 8!

Spring Breakers

This movie is wild. We wouldn’t expect anything less from director Harmony Korine as his signature filmmaking style ignores mainstream society in favor of debauchery. Spring Breakers is about four college-aged girls who decide to rob a diner to fund their spring break trip to Florida. Their shenanigans get even more out of control after they link up with a drug-dealing rapper played by James Franco.

The Beach Bum

In Korine’s latest film, the main character, Moondog (Matthew McConaughy), is a poet who lives life on his own terms at the expense of everyone around him. As he stumbles his way through life drunk and high, Moondog somehow manages to come out on top in every outrageous scenario he gets himself into. The Beach Bum didn’t score at the box office on its opening weekend, but McConaughy’s performance is entertaining, to say the least.

Never Goin’ Back

Never Goin’ Back is filmmaker Augustine Frizzell’s directorial debut. The movie is about two friends, Angela (Maia Mitchell) and Jessie (Camila Morrone), who drop out of high school to pursue waitressing jobs and a more carefree existence. When they decide to take a week off of work for a beach trip, the girls are confronted with the reality of life after they lose all of their money to fund their adventures.

Spring Breakdown

Former SNL comedians Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch star in the hilarious comedy, Spring Breakdown. The movie follows three adult friends who are hell-bent on making up for missing spring break during their college years. They embark on their first-ever spring break trip to South Padre Island, Texas, and find themselves in disastrous situations.

The Edge of Seventeen

This coming-of-age dramedy follows Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) as she navigates teenagehood as a high school junior. Discouraged and lonely, Nadine is tired of living in the shadow of her all-star older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). She feels hopeless until she meets a friend who helps her realize that all is not lost when you’re seventeen, awkward and suicidal.
