Brandon Trost Worked As Cinematographer On Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

We’ll just flat-out say it. Brandon Trost is a rock star. He is an incredibly seasoned cinematographer who has amassed over 93 credits under his belt. While that figure may seem like a lot on its own, one of the most impressive things about his body of work is just how varied it is. Whether he is working on a comedy like The Interview with Seth Rogen, Popstar: Never Stop Stopping with Andy Samburg, or serious dramas like Diary of a Teenage Girl or Can You Ever Forgive Me, Trost is an astonishingly agile creative.

We interviewed Brandon Trost in late 2019, and he shed light on his creative process.

Even as a student, Brandon Trost pulled out all the stops, working on dozens of student films in any position he could, and passionately learning about how each role on set works. His community involvement as a student at The Los Angeles Film School earned Brandon the respect and admiration of his peers, and helped build relationships that would foster creative opportunities in the years following his graduation. In 2009, Trost worked with fellow alum, Brian Taylor, as director of photography on Crank: High Voltage, a frenetic action film starring Jason Statham. They would work together again on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which featured the dramatic stylings of Oscar-Winner Nicolas Cage.

From that point on, Trost’s work ethic and immediately likable personality helped connect him with comedy stars Seth Rogen and James Franco. With this creative brain trust in place, Trost worked as director of photography on the post-apocalyptic comedy, This is the End, feels-filled coming-of-age story Neighbors, and worldwide controversy, The Interview. Keep in mind, these are just a few of the films Trost has been a part of with Rogen and Franco.

While his work on these brilliant comedies is exceptional, in recent years, Trost has creatively diversified himself even more. Why? Simple. Because he is Brandon Trost. He shot the dramedy, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, in 2015. This small-budget film ended up winning 16 industry awards.

Finally, Brandon Trost has kept busy on dramas, including the award-winning HBO series, Barry and the upcoming television series, The Righteous Gemstones.

Brandon Trost helped turn Can You Ever Forgive Me into an Oscar-nominated film, with the help of a Panavision DXL with some exceptional Primo 70 cinema primes.

Finally, in 2019, Trost worked again with Zac Efron, and this time not on a Neighbors sequel. This time, Trost was the cinematographer on the film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile for Netflix. The film, directed by Joe Berlinger, is about the media coverage of serial killer Ted Bundy as he faced the families of his victims in the courtroom.
