LAFS Alumni at SXSW

South by Southwest just wrapped its 9-day festival and we are still celebrating

Every year all eyes turn to Austin, Texas, as SXSW takes over the city giving musicians, artists, filmmakers and creatives a chance to showcase their talents. In its more than 30-year run, SXSW has become synonymous with cool and creative. The festival ended last week, but we wanted to recognize the alumni who submitted their film, Other Side of the Box, and won!

Three graduates from The Los Angeles Film School won in the Midnight Short category for the suspenseful short film, Other Side of the Box. The filmmakers included producer Nick Coppola (Film program 2014), composer Avery Kentis (LARS 2015) and director Caleb J. Phillips (Film program 2014).

“SXSW is considered one of the biggest film festivals in the world. It was overwhelming to think that we would have a film screen here alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood,” said Coppola.

The SXSW Film Festival screened dramas, documentaries, comedies and genre standouts, including Jordan Peele’s Us as the Opening Night Film, which has garnered enormous buzz.

“Being there provided an endless amount of opportunities with filmmakers from all over the world. With many informative panels from some of the most influential filmmakers in the industry—we learned so much,” added Coppola.

Their film, Other Side of the Box, also won “Best Bump in the Night” at the Savannah Film Festival in November last year.
