Recording Grad Derrell Davis discusses working in the industry

We sat down with Recording Arts graduate Derrell Davis to discuss what he loves about working in the industry.

What inspired you want to get involved in the entertainment industry?

“Growing up a skateboarder i was introduced to all types of music form all different genres.  I was always fascinated by the beats and arrangements that the groups and artists came up with. As I got  older I started to get more into old-school hip-hop. Mostly rap music from the 90s era. Artists like Nas, Biggie Smalls, and Big L amazed me with their wit, and how they could create these intricate stories through their lyrics. That feeling is what got me into making my own songs and writing my own lyrics. At that moment in my life that is all I wanted; To create music for the people, and inspire the masses. I knew that I couldn’t just hope for the best with no backup plan, and I also knew that if I went to school it would only make me that much closer to the industry and the people who control it. So I took the leap and signed up for school.”

What have you learned from school that you are now applying in your professional life?

“How to have a professional mind-set and stay on top of my tasks.”

What do you like about sound engineering?

“Not having the pressure of having to sell my work. I can still make the music I want without any influence from the radio or what kind of sound is popular today.  Also being a part of the creative process at the roots and to see how the project turns out.”

What are some projects that you are proud to have worked on?

“I have worked with Tony Toni Tone , Jaguar wright,  Goapele, Legally blind and Pop Lyfe, just to name a few.”

What are some words of advice that you would give to new students entering the program?

“Keep the hunger alive, and don’t stop fighting for what you believe in. Don’t succumb to anything. Take chances and explore the world. You will fail a million times before you succeed. The world is yours!”

Congratulations on your accomplishments, Derrell! We are so proud of you!
