Screening of Boat People

On Friday, April 21st, director Ann Hui’s BOAT PEOPLE will be screened from the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Hui, known for her Chinese language films on social issues, has over 30 titles to her name. She remains one of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers of the Hong Kong New Wave and has been directing feature films and Television since the mid-1970s.

Hui speaks about her work as a socially conscious storyteller. Aware of the difficulties in finding such projects that would both, “attract investors as well as appeal to the public” she strives to, “present something that is watchable and at the same time attractive.” Her films allow the audience to view and analyze important and relevant social issues.

In this spirit, the UCLA Film Archive presents her work as part of their series titled In Transit: Refugees on Film. BOAT PEOPLE won numerous international prizes and is considered one of the best Chinese language films of all time. The UCLA Film Archive will screen on 35mm, color, 106 min.
