The Los Angeles Film School Alumni Shine With 28 Oscar Nominations Across Seven Films Including 2 Wins

Congrats to the talented Alumni who worked on Oscar-nominated and winning Productions.

The 96th Academy Awards aired on ABC LIVE on Sunday, March 10, 2024. We are proud to announce that four alumni worked on two Academy Award-winning films (Barbie and American Fiction). Congrats to all the alumni from The L.A. Film School who contributed their talents to Oscar-nominated and winning productions!

Barbie

Barbie

Dana Morris (Film 2005) was Camera Operator: A-Camera Steadicam for Barbie, which received 8 nominations and won Best Original Song. Dana has over 45 IMDB credits, including past Oscar movies I, Tonya, and Blonde. He has also worked on several Marvel and DC movies and was nominated in 2017 for 2 operating awards (for I, Tonya) by the British Society of Cinematographers.


American Fiction

Merhnaz Mohabti (Recording Arts 2014) was the ADR Mixer for American Fiction, which received 5 nominations and won for Best Adapted Screenplay. She has nearly 200 IMDB credits and was nominated for a Motion Picture Sound Editor’s 2018 Golden Reel Award in Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Sound Effects, Foley, Music, Dialogue, and ADR for Single Presentation Broadcast Media Fire Chasers.

Justin Garcia (Film 2009) was Gaffer: Additional Photography on American Fiction. Justin has over 70 IMDB credits, including Legion, C’mon C’mon, and They Cloned Tyrone.

Christian Lainez (Recording Arts 2013) was a Boom Operator on American Fiction. Christian has been working steadily since his graduation with over 125 IMDB credits.


We couldn’t be more proud of our alumni who contributed to the productions nominated for Academy Awards! Twelve alumni have been credited with work on seven remarkable films that collectively earned 28 Oscar nominations in films including “Barbie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Flamin’ Hot,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “American Fiction.”

Phillip Bladh (2008) served as production sound mixer on the film which received a nomination for “Best Original Song.”
