Recording Grad Kevin Yamada Discusses Being A Business Owner

Los Angeles Film School alum Kevin Yamada has dedicated a lot of time at start up recording label and studio Studio 637, and it’s clearly paying off. Having previously worked at Guitar Center, Kevin knew he wanted something more hands on and closely related to audio engineering, so he took an internship at RMC Music Group while still enrolled in the program. Going to school full-time, working part-time and interning part-time brought Kevin the knowledge, insight and experience to propel him to where he is today: full-time engineer.

Having made the necessary sacrifices, Kevin is now able to focus on building his career as a recording engineer at Studio 637. He spends most of his days in the studio, setting up sessions for artists, in addition to mixing and mastering their recorded tracks. Kevin basically does everything from start to finish, which makes him a major asset for the studio. Since the studio is a “one-stop-shop”, they provide artists a comprehensive package of not just recording, mixing and mastering, but also film sound and music video sound editing. By providing studio time for music and film, this allows them to offer a catalog of music that was recorded there as possible options for film scores. The studio also offers live streaming, so bands can rehearse on a green screen stage and have that streamed live via Ustream. There is another engineer who focuses on film sound and an intern who assists where need be, however Kevin is the go-to for all music recording sessions.

When asked if what he learned in school helped, his response was:

“The time spent in the recording program really helped with the work I do here and in refining the skills I use in the studio. I had a basic know how, but the Recording School really helped, especially in Pro Tools. It looks good when a client comes in and I know what I’m doing and never have to second guess myself to go back and correct mistakes.”

To show gratitude for all he’s learned, Kevin is offering a 20% discount to all students, alumni, faculty and staff on audio or film work. He’s also offering 10% off to anyone who comes in and mentions the film or recording school, so tell your friends!
