The Lego Movie Q&A Recap

On Thursday, July 31st, The Los Angeles Film School hosted a Q&A with the Co-Director, Associate Producer, Production Designer, Co-Editor, and Cinematographer of The Lego Movie.
The film, a massive international box-office success, was a trial of innovation, technological innovation, and ingenuity.

Co-Director Chris McKay, reflected on the beginning stages of the film,

We started the process (of making the movie) by using the LEGO Builder technology, free on LEGO’s website, before moving to our render engine

Once he and the crew looked further at the kind of world The LEGO Movie should exist in, his team quickly started to prototype and build a brand new rendering and lighting engine. Amber Naismith, Associate Producer on the film, discussed the collaborative approach to making the movie.

Everyone was invited to offer their thoughts during the creation of the movie.

Chris McKay added, regarding the outreach his team made to budding LEGO designers

We held a contest for vehicle design and lego movies that would end up in the film.

In animation, similar with film, a particular scene can take up the most production time. Amber Naismith recollects the most arduous scene of the movie.

One of the last scenes we finished in the film was the first we started: the city chase scene.

The LEGO Movie was an incredible box office success, and Chris McKay has been hired to director the sequel. Special thanks to everyone for attending the Q&A, and keep checking your emails for upcoming events!
