A Recap of the Mix Masters Panel at The Los Angeles Film School

Behind every Grammy-winning album is a creative sanctuary, and behind every sanctuary is a Studio Manager. Often described as the “central nervous system” of the music industry, these professionals bridge the gap between the creative chaos of a session and the logistical demands of a high-stakes business.

Recently, Tony Shepperd (Grammy-nominated producer/engineer) sat down with an elite panel of Los Angeles studio legends to discuss what it really takes to keep the tape rolling in the world’s most iconic rooms.

The All-Star Panel

  • Paula Salvatore (Capitol Studios & Sound City Studios)
  • Tina Morris (The Village Recording Studios)
  • Vicki Giordano (Evergreen Studios)
  • Reut Feldman (Clearlake Recording Studios & LA Recording School Alum)
  • Candace Stewart (EastWest Studios)

More Than Four Walls: The Room as an Instrument

While home studios are more capable than ever, the panel emphasized that world-class facilities offer something software can’t replicate: the acoustic space.

“The room is an instrument on its own,” noted Candace Stewart. “There’s a reason we worry so much about design and acoustics.” Beyond the gear, there is a “cross-pollination” that happens in a professional facility. When legendary artists are in different rooms at the same time, collaborations happen organically—a magic that doesn’t exist in a bedroom setup.

Candace’s advice to emerging artists? “If you make a little money, book a day. Come into a real studio and see how it enhances what you’ve been working on. You’re going to be happily surprised.”

The “Service” in Service Industry

Tony Shepperd put it bluntly: “This is basically a service industry. If you can’t service the client, you’re in trouble.”

Whether it’s a last-minute request to record strings for a Kendrick Lamar track or tracking down a specific candle from London for Seal (in the pre-Amazon era), the studio manager’s job is to ensure the artist feels at home. As Paula Salvatore joked about the logistical nightmares of high-profile sessions at the iconic Capitol Records building, “Oh my god, I’ve got a Beatle mad at me!”

The Skill Set: Humility, Confidence, and Signal Flow

What does it take to get hired at a place like EastWest or The Village? The panel broke down the “matchmaking” process of pairing engineers with artists:

  • Read the Room: Tony emphasized that you have to sense the energy. Is it time to be invisible, or time to step in?
  • Technical Honesty: When hiring, Tina Morris and the panel look for a solid grasp of basic signal flow. “We just want to know what you know,” they agreed. Being honest about your skill level is better than “winging it” and breaking expensive gear.
  • The Balancing Act: Candace summed up the ideal candidate as a mix of humility, confidence, and eagerness.

Women in the Studio

The panel also highlighted the shifting landscape for women in audio. At The Village, Tina Morris noted that their high number of female staff creates a unique environment. “We had a day where we had Leann Rimes, Lady Gaga, and Kesha all in at once… they all felt so comfortable there.”

The advice for women entering the field was clear: Lead as an engineer first. As the panel noted, your skill and “grace under fire” are what define you in the heat of a session.

The Studio Hierarchy: A Team Effort

To the students in the audience, the panel laid out the reality of the studio food chain. While everyone is ultimately subordinate to the Artist, the ecosystem relies on every layer:

  1. Studio Manager (The Architect of the Vibe)
  2. Engineers (The Sonic Visionaries)
  3. Assistants & Runners (The Lifeblood of the Session)
  4. Techs & Interns (The Foundation)

“We’re the people behind the scenes. If we don’t do our thing, it doesn’t happen. Music is amazing, but if no one captured it, no one would hear it.” — Candace Stewart
