Animation, Class of 2022

Maddie Goldberg

The Los Angeles Film School alum and east coast native Maddie Goldberg is an Emmy Award-winning motion designer, 3D animator, and multimedia artist currently based in Hartford, Connecticut for her animation role at ESPN, a role she began shortly after graduating in 2022.

It is in this role that Maddie won a Sports Emmy for her work on the ESPN and NFL collaboration, Toy Story Funday Football, a first-of-its-kind NFL immersive game presentation which streamed on Disney+, ESPN+, and NFL+.

Having recently celebrated four years at ESPN, she continues to work on ESPN’s digital activations and virtual environments for SportsCenter, College Football, and more utilizing tools like Unreal Engine and Cinema 4D, as well as AI.

Raised in a creative and musical household, with a guitar-playing father and an artist mother gave Maddie a safe space to explore her own artistic side freely-learning to play the drums, guitar, and piano as a child.

It was also as a child that the she would first hold her own movie camera and her love for filmmaking and editing content would now rival her love for creating music.

In fourth grade she began to cast, producer, film, and edit music videos featuring her friends in her backyard. By the time she reached high school, she had outgrown Movie Maker and iMovie for editing, instead teaching herself Final Cut Pro. These new skills not only allowed her to take on freelance design and editing work from school clubs and eventually brands and music artists, but also gave her a first taste of animation–opening up a whole new world of possibilities for creative talents.

Also, during her senior year in high school, she participated in an immersive filmmaker’s masterclass that B&H Photo and Video,  a camera and video superstore located in Manhattan, was offering. There she learned Avid among other new skills. Falling in love with the magic of New York during that experience, she decided to attend Pace University to study filmmaking. At this time, she also attended courses at New York University (NYU) to learn Cinema 4K. She found that the current program she was enrolled in lacked curriculum in animation, an area that she wanted to pursue professionally after creating animated work while freelancing for companies like Airbnb and Door Dash. So she decided that it was time to find a new school that would better prepare her for a career in animation.

“I loved the program! Especially how we would focus on one specific area each month, allowing us to really dive deeper. I spent a lot of time in the lab, I asked teachers questions when I didn’t know things.”

Making the move from NYC to sunny Hollywood, she enrolled in The L.A. Film School’s Animation Visual Effects bachelor’s program.

The field of animation is one that is constantly employing new tech and software, Maddie shares this advice around AI.

“We need people who know how to use AI.

I recommend that instead of being fearful that it’s going to take your job, that you learn how to use it, because there are going to be prompting jobs.

There are going to be jobs based around being able to talk to certain large language models of AI and the more that you get your feet wet now by being able to prompt, the better off you will be in this evolving tech landscape.”
