Meet Up-and-Coming Producer AJ Winslow

Writer-director Brett Smith brings Freedom’s Path, a Civil War drama starring Gerran (1917), RJ Cyler (The Harder They Fall) and Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), to the silver screen. The film tells the story of two young men: a wounded Union soldier and a free Black man who strike up an unlikely friendship. The pair navigate the dangers of helping runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad while escaping a ruthless slave catcher who tries to bring everything to a devastating end.

Four alumni from The Los Angeles Film School contributed their talents to GRAMMY-nominated artists including Mary J. Blige (Good Morning Gorgeous), Christina Aguilera (Aguilera), and Carlos Vives (Cumbiana II). We proudly recognize Jaycen Joshua (audio 2003), Andrés Borda Zabala (Recording Arts 2011), Jhair Lazo (Recording Arts 2012), and Julio Ulloa (Recording Arts 2015) for their contributions including vocal engineering, immersive mix engineering and producing.

Oscar-Nominated Sequels Go Head-to-Head for Best Picture. See Our Alumni Contributions.

We're excited to share the five alumni from the Computer Animation Program at The L.A. Film School who worked on Oscar-nominated sequels. Both blockbuster movies Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water are in the running for Best Picture. For the first time in a long time, both the No. 1 (Avatar) and No. 2 (Top Gun) highest-grossing films of the year globally are going head-to-head for Best Picture, according to Deadline.com. This rivalry could aid in a much-needed rating boost for this year's televised award show on March 12.

The first annual Golden Thesis Awards Ceremony is an alumni and student showcase of 2020-2022 thesis and original short films with a writer, producer, director, cast or theme featuring a diverse voice. This includes creatives of all backgrounds, including ethnicity, culture, gender identity and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The festival is organized by the Career Development and Film Departments with the purpose of championing dynamic and diverse storytellers who have or are currently studying at The L.A. Film School.

If you aren't familiar with the name Randy Marx, just give it a couple of years before you hear his name in mainstream hip-hop. Randy Marx graduated in 2017 with his degree in Music Production and has built a recording career here in his hometown of Los Angeles. As an artist, Randy exudes a coolness that makes you want to pay attention to what he's creating. You can easily tell that everything he creates is done with heart and a deep passion for music.

Alumnus Chase Thomas has not slowed down ever since we last interviewed him about producing Broadway hits A Christmas Carol and Jagged Little Pill. In fact, his workload has tripled. Besides being nominated for 2021 Broadway Global Producer of the Year, Chase has transitioned into VFX television production. We are proud of the contributions made by 60 different alumni who worked on 40 productions with 170 total nominations and 34 wins. A special congrats to Emmy-winning alum John Valerio! The Creative Arts Emmys took place on September 3 and 4, and film alum John Valerio went home with the prized gold statue.
